low-level format (hard disk repair / hard damaged)
low format:
the difference between a high-level formatting low-level formatting. Imagine you have a wooden table and your son (s) or nephew (a) write on it with pencils (crayons) colors, then take a damp cloth and clean the table and ready (FORMAT A HIGH LEVEL, what the DOS format command). Now if your son (s) or nephew (a) write on it with a nail, or drill the table, you should polish it (sanding) until the figure disappears and the table has the same level, then you will have to varnish it and remain usable again (low-level format is to say the program takes the disc and left as just left the factory, but you can not occupy areas that are badly damaged, then mount the disk using fdisk or similar, and finally high-level fomat). Lose disk space low-level formatting, but it is better to run out of disk
